Hosiery was meticulously suspended from the forward edge of the wood burning caloric apparatus, pursuant to our anticipatory pleasure regarding an imminent visitation from an eccentric philanthropist among whose folkloric appellations is the honorific title of St. Nicholas.

The prepubescent siblings, comfortably ensconced in their respective accommodations of repose, were experiencing subconscious visual hallucinations of variegated fruit confections moving rhythmically through their cerebrums. My conjugal partner and I, attired in our nocturnal head coverings, were about to take slumberous advantage of the hibernal darkness when upon the avenaceous exterior portion of the grounds there ascended such a cacophony of dissonance that I felt compelled to arise with alacrity from my place of repose for the purpose of ascertaining the precise source thereof.

Hastening to the casement, I forthwith opened the barriers sealing this fenestration, noting thereupon that the lunar brilliance without, reflected as it was on the surface of a recent crystalline precipitation, might be said to rival that of the solar meridian itself - thus permitting my incredulous optical sensory organs to behold a miniature airborne runnered conveyance drawn by eight diminutive specimens of the genus Rangifer, piloted by a minuscule,
aged chauffeur so ebullient and nimble that it became instantly apparent to me that he was indeed our anticipated caller. With his ungulate motive power travelling at what may possibly have been more vertiginous velocity than patriotic alar predators, he vociferated loudly, expelled breath musically through contracted labia, and addressed each of the octet by his or her respective cognomen - "Now Dasher, now Dancer..." et al. - guiding them to the uppermost exterior level of our abode, through which structure I could readily distinguish the concatenations of each of the 32 cloven pedal extremities.

As I retracted my cranium from its erstwhile location, and was performing a 180-degree pivot, our distinguished visitant achieved - with utmost celerity and via a downward leap - entry by way of the smoke passage. He was clad entirely in animal pelts soiled by the ebony residue from oxidations of carboniferous fuels which had accumulated on the walls thereof. His resemblance to a street vendor I attributed largely to the plethora of assorted playthings which he bore dorsally in a commodious cloth receptacle.

His orbs were scintillant with reflected luminosity, while his submaxillary dermal indentations gave every evidence of engaging amiability. The capillaries of his malar regions and nasal appurtenance were engorged with blood which suffused the subcutaneous layers, the former approximating the coloration of Albion's floral emblem, the latter that of the Prunus avium,
or sweet cherry. His amusing sub- and supralabials resembled nothing so much as a common loop knot, and their ambient hirsute facial adornment appeared like small, tabular and columnar crystals of frozen water.

Clenched firmly between his incisors was a smoking piece whose grey fumes, forming a tenuous ellipse about his occiput, were suggestive of a decorative seasonal circlet of holly. His visage was wider than it was high, and when he waxed audibly mirthful, his corpulent abdominal region undulated in the manner of impectinated fruit syrup in a hemispherical container. He was, in short, neither more nor less than an obese, jocund, multigenarian gnome, the optical perception of whom rendered me visibly frolicsome despite every effort to refrain from so being. By rapidly lowering and then elevating one eyelid and rotating his head slightly to one side, he indicated that trepidation on my part was groundless.

Without utterance and with dispatch, he commenced filling the aforementioned appended hosiery with various of the aforementioned articles of merchandise extracted from his aforementioned previously dorsally transported cloth receptacle. Upon completion of this task, he executed an abrupt about-face, placed a single manual digit in lateral juxtaposition to his olfactory organ, inclined his cranium forward in a gesture of leave-taking, and forthwith effected his egress by renegotiating (in reverse) the smoke passage. He then propelled himself in a short vector onto his conveyance, directed a musical expulsion of air through his contracted oral sphincter to the antlered quadrupeds of burden, and proceeded to soar aloft in a movement hitherto observable chiefly among the seed-bearing portions of a common weed. As one marketing analyst explained, "The face of the corporation is very important. When you identify it with a single person or thing, it’s important to convey a positive image. We all remember Clara Peller, the ‘Where’s-the-beef?’ lady. She was so cute and made everyone think of Wendys. Or was it Hardees? Well, anyway, that's not important. Today, when people think of a gecko, caveman or stack-of-money-you-can-save-by-switching, we all think of Geico, right? Well, no longer.”

Many will recall last weeks’ emergency news conference in which Geico announced they were dropping the googly-eyed stack of money from their marketing campaign. As a Geico representative explained during the question and answer period, “We thought we were being smart. We wanted to avoid having all our eggs in one basket, so to speak, so we came up with the unprecedented strategy of having three distinct simultaneous campaigns.” She continued saying, “It became apparent with the economy as it is that people no longer found a stack of money endearing. They felt it was mocking them.” She recalled speaking to a former customer, now living in his car who asked, “Where is all that money we saved now? I don't have it. I think you have it.” The representative added, “It was scary. He was really upset.”

This morning details of a new scandal involving another of the spokestriad emerged. “Caveman”, as he is commonly known, is reported to have recently discovered fire and is alleged to have burned down several libraries, two newspaper stands and a Barnes and Noble. According to police reports, the much put-upon, motorcycle-riding, bowling-going, jet-setting, prehistoric-dude-about-town apparently thought trees from near his cave had been taken, strangely cut and were stacked inside the alleged targets. As the distraught, soon-to-be former Geico spokesperson was being led away in handcuffs, he was overheard screaming, "Arrrr! Treebooks bad! Geico bad! Fire good!" Inexplicably several Starbucks were also targeted.

On a possibly related note, Geico representatives are said to be looking into the mating habits of the common green gecko.

I think because when you talk or listen (or see, but that's another matter), you drop a type of energy level. I don't know if this may be what some call chi.
I can feel this when I speak, especially the first time in a while, like in the morning. It's similar, but different for listening.
It feels like when descending into an emotional state. It's a classic argument for silence and logic and eschewing of emotions to gain some higher state. This of the Vulcans from Star Trek, for example, or monks, priests, etc. Or guys

The Differences Between Men and Women

Let's say a guy named Roger is attracted to a woman named
Elaine. He asks her out to a movie; she accepts; they have a
pretty good time. A few nights later he asks her out to dinner,
and again they enjoy themselves.

They continue to see each other regularly, and after a while
neither one of them is seeing anybody else.

One evening when they're driving home, a thought
occurs to Elaine, and, without really thinking, she says it
aloud: "Roger, do you realize that, as of tonight, we've been
seeing each other for exactly six months?"

And then there is silence in the car. To Elaine, it seems like a
very loud silence. She thinks to herself: Geez, I wonder if it
bothers him that I said that. Maybe he's been feeling confined by
our relationship; maybe he thinks I'm trying to push him into
some kind of obligation that he doesn't want, or isn't sure of.

And Roger is thinking: Gosh. Six months.

And Elaine is thinking: But, hey, I'm not so sure I want this
kind of relationship, either. Sometimes I wish I had a little
more space, so I'd have time to think about whether I really want
us to keep going the way we are, moving steadily toward ...I
mean, where are we going? Are we just going to keep seeing each
other at this level of intimacy? Are we heading toward marriage?
Toward children? Toward a lifetime together? Am I ready for that
level of commitment? Do I really even know this person?

And Roger is thinking: ...so that means it was ...let's see
...February when we started going out, which was right after I
had the car at the dealer's, which means ...lemme check the
odometer ...Whoa! I am way overdue for an oil change here...

And Elaine is thinking: He's upset. I can see it on his face.
Maybe I'm reading this completely wrong. Maybe he wants more from
our relationship, more intimacy, more commitment; maybe he has
sensed -- even before I sensed it -- that I was feeling some
reservations. Yes, I bet that's it. That's why he's so reluctant
to say anything about his own feelings. He's afraid of being
rejected.

And Roger is thinking: And I'm gonna have them look at the
transmission again. I don't care what those morons say, it's
still not shifting right. And they better not try to blame it on
the cold weather this time. What cold weather? It's 87 degrees
out, and this thing is shifting like a goddamn garbage truck, and
I paid those incompetent thieves $600.

And Elaine is thinking: He's angry. And I don't blame him. I'd be
angry, too. God, I feel so guilty, putting him through this, but
I can't help the way I feel. I'm just not sure.

And Roger is thinking: They'll probably say it's only a 90-day
warranty. That's exactly what they're gonna say, the scumballs.

And Elaine is thinking: Maybe I'm just too idealistic, waiting
for a knight to come riding up on his white horse, when I'm
sitting right next to a perfectly good person, a person I enjoy
being with, a person I truly do care about, a person who seems to
truly care about me. A person who is in pain because of my
self-centered, schoolgirl romantic fantasy.

And Roger is thinking: Warranty? They want a warranty I'll give
them a damn warranty. I'll take their warranty and stick it right
up their ....

"Roger," Elaine says aloud.

"What?" asks Roger, startled.

"Please don't torture yourself like this," she says, her eyes
beginning to brim with tears. "Maybe I should never have ...Oh
God, I feel so....." (She breaks down, sobbing.)

"What?" says Roger, totally perplexed.

"I'm such a fool," Elaine sobs. "I mean, I know there's no
knight. I really know that. It's silly. There's no knight, and
there's no horse."

"There's no horse?" says Roger.

"You think I'm a fool, don't you?" Elaine says.

"No!" says Roger, glad to finally know the correct answer.

"It's just that ...It's that I ...I need some time," Elaine says.

(There is a 15-second pause while Roger, thinking as fast as he
can, tries to come up with a safe response. Finally he comes up
with one that he thinks might work.) "Yes," he says.

(Elaine, deeply moved, touches his hand.) "Oh, Roger, do you
really feel that way?" she says.

"What way?" says Roger.

"That way about time," says Elaine.

"Oh," says Roger. Still hoping he's on the right track he
responds, "Yes."

(Elaine turns to face him and gazes deeply into his eyes, causing
him to become very nervous about what she might say next,
especially if it involves a horse. At last she speaks.)

"Thank you, Roger," Elaine says.

"Thank you," says Roger.

Then he takes her home, and she lies on her bed, a conflicted,
tortured soul, and weeps until dawn, whereas when Roger gets back
to his place, he opens a bag of Doritos, turns on the TV, and
immediately becomes deeply involved in a rerun of a tennis match
between two Czechoslovakians he never heard of. A tiny voice in
the far recesses of his mind tells him that something major was
going on back there in the car, but he is pretty sure there is no
way he would ever understand what, and so he figures it's better
if he doesn't think about it. (This is also Roger's policy
regarding world hunger.)

The next day Elaine will call her closest friend, or perhaps two
of them, and they will talk about this situation for six straight
hours. In painstaking detail, they will analyze everything she
said and everything he said, going over it time and time again,
exploring every word, expression, and gesture for nuances of
meaning, considering every possible ramification. They will
continue to discuss this subject, off and on, for weeks, maybe
months, never reaching any definite conclusions, but never
getting bored with it, either.

Meanwhile, Roger, while playing racquetball one day with a mutual
friend of his and Elaine's, will pause just before serving,
frown, and ask: "Norm, did Elaine ever own a horse?"

I know that they have 'Instant Classics' on ESPN the Ocho or ESPN Classic or whatever they call it, but these are cartoons that I have kept for a long time. Many of them contain phrases that Mrs. Beisbolfan and I use all the time. One such cartoon phrase is when we both are thinking and then say the same thing. This occurs with a frequency that is often scary! It's usually easily explained in that we both have a similar frame of reference and something external will trigger the thought. But sometimes it's not explainable other than we may be getting a psychic (read tiny electrical) nudge from the other...nah!
Over the years, we have slightly revised our take on this, saying "No, they don't" when we are of like mind. But the sentiment is the same.

The Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) is a small nocturnal fox found in the north of the Sahara Desert of North Africa which has distinctively large ears. Its name comes from the Arabic fenek, a term for various fur-bearing animals.
The Fennec Fox weighs up to 3.3 lb with a body length of up to 16 in. The tail is an additional 10 in or so, and the ears can be 6 in long. The coats are often a sandy color, allowing them to blend with their desert surroundings. Its characteristic ears serve to dissipate heat and to hear the movement of prey at night. Its ears are sensitive enough to hear large insects, such as beetles and locusts walk on the sand. Its coat reflects sunlight during the day and conserves heat at night. The soles of its feet are protected from the hot sand by thick fur.
The Fennec Fox is a nocturnal omnivore. At night, it hunts rodents, insects, birds, and eggs of birds. Much of the diet is desert vegetation, from which the Fennec Fox gets most of its water. This consists of grasses, some roots, and some fruit and berries.

RIO RANCHO, N.M. - A New Mexico woman with an affinity for rabbits has run afoul of the law after her rascally pets started multiplying like, well, rabbits. Rio Rancho police said Monday that Nancy Haseman was cited under an ordinance that allows five pets per household after an animal control officer found 334 bunnies hopping around in her yard.
